Is the new 4C the most attainable supercar of all?

by Michael Satterfield

Supercars are for most just a dream, even when they go depreciate enough to become affordable to purchase the maintenance becomes more than most people are willing to deal with. Alfa Romeo hopes to change all that with their 2015 4C Coupe, it is by far one of the prettiest I have ever seen and with with 0-60 time in the mid 4 seconds its more than just a pretty face. So I was shocked to see that a mid-engined, Italian supercar was actually affordable.... Those are generally words that are not used in the same sentence. To give you an idea a Lamborghini Gallardo ticks all the boxes, it has a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds, its mid-engined, Italian, but the Gallardo has an MSRP of $212,000. That is where the featherweight Alfa comes in and changes the game with an MSRP of less than $54,000.

The new 4C will start at just $53,900 for the standard coupe (plus destination) and is filled with technological tricks that are generally reserved for the track. The car features an intercooled turbocharged 1750cc direct-injection engine with variable-valve timing that is pushing out 237hp. A carbon fiber monocoque and aluminum chassis with a composted body keeps the weight to under 2500 lbs. This combination of lightness and power gives the Alfa 4C supercar performance in an affordable package.

“The all-new 4C marks the return of ‘the great Alfa Romeos` and represents the purest formation of the brand’s DNA with its supercar-levels of performance and innovation, all while focusing on making the driver an integral part and completion of the machine,” said Harald Wester, CEO of Alfa Romeo. “With its technological solutions derived directly from Formula 1, the Alfa Romeo 4C creates an infusion of body and machine, an extension of its driver’s soul that is ready, capable and willing to respond and deliver.”

To launch the brand return to the US Market 500 "Launch Edition" 4C's will be offered, these limited editions are priced at $68,400 (excluding destination) and include a number of special limited edition features including race tuned suspension, carbon fiber spoiler and mirror caps, race exhaust, forged wheels, and several styling upgrades.
