Last weekend Sear & Craftsman Tools invited me out to check out the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway, in Perris California. This was my first time ever at a Sprint Car race and I really didn't know what to expect.
The first thing you notice is just how small the cars are, essentially they are adult-sized go-karts with over 900hp. Looking down into the cockpit of one makes you feel claustrophobic, the rear of the engine is right up against the driver’s knees, then you notice that the drive-shaft passed between the driver's legs, and just like in a go-kart the throttle is operated by one foot and the brake by the other. These are not machines for your average driver.
The stands began to fill in as the start of the race drew nearer. I was surprised at how large the crowd was, but Sprint Car has a loyal following, and it is one of the most accessible motorsports for spectators in North America. With over 90 races in almost every state, there is a good chance that there is a Sprint Car race on the calendar near you.
Craftsman had reserved a box for us to watch the races from as well as to see some of their new innovative tools; my favorite was the Pro Series Tool Chest with an app that allowed you to lock and unlock access to the tool box remotely. Craftsman also unveiled their gold 90th-anniversary limited edition tool sets.
The race started and we settled into watch some wild racing as the little Sprint Cars drifted sideways around the corners at over 100mph. Speed, dirt, crashes and the truly enthusiastic crowd made this one of the best races I have ever been to.
