Edsel Ford II's Custom Mustang

by Michael Satterfield

When your dad is Henry Ford II you get some pretty special gifts. Edsel Ford II found this out on Christmas morning, 1964. This one of a kind Mustang was built as a gift for Edsel's 16th birthday and his first car.

I came downstairs that Christmas morning with my sisters and my father indicated I should take a look outside, this amazing Mustang was sitting in the driveway, and I immediately grabbed my coat and shoes and went outside to check it out. As is the fate of many first cars, this one of a kind Mustang was loaned to a friend who was involved in a crash, destroying the car.

The car featured a number of custom touches, like a one-off egg-crate grille, custom interior with a number of the design cues that would find their way into the 1967 Deluxe Interior. It also looks like it has integrated Air Conditioning and some cool metal strips in the footwells. Outside the car got a functional hood scoop, fender-mounted bullet mirrors, and pearl white paint with unique blue stripes.

These photos were found in the Ford Archives and are all that is left of this amazing gift.
