McLaren: Built In Britain

McLaren Automotive, the British creator of luxury, high-performance sportscars and supercars, will be displaying its award-winning cars within the ‘Built in Britain’ area at the Confused.com London Motor Show, due to take place between May 17-20 at the ExCeL London.
The exhibition celebrates all that is great in British automotive engineering and will be focusing exclusively on vehicles which are designed, built or assembled in the UK.
Opening the high-octane display will be the ground-breaking McLaren 720S, the winner of EVO Car of the Year 2017 and BBC TopGear Magazine Supercar of the Year 2017. The second-generation Super Series will be taking center stage at the show, alongside models from the McLaren Sports Series, including the practical McLaren 570GT and the uncompromised 570S Spider, which combines exceptional dynamism with the extra exhilaration of open-air motoring.

As an iconic British brand, McLaren Automotive continues to invest in British manufacturing. The company’s state-of-the-art McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) and McLaren Production Centre (MPC) in Woking, Surrey, where the cars are hand-assembled, are home to a growing workforce of around 2,300 people. The brand’s first global retailer opened at One Hyde Park, London in 2011 and has been continuously delivering the highest-standards of service to discerning McLaren customers based in the capital. Today, the company operates via a dedicated network of 86 locations in 31 markets and in 2017 generated record sales of 3,340 cars globally. Sales in its second-largest and home market were up by 23%, reaching 550 vehicles. The MPC is now operating a second shift and building up to 20 cars a day to support this unprecedented increase in customer demand. As a result of this significant growth, McLaren Automotive has been ranked as the number one company overall in The Sunday Times Top Track 250 league table, which lists some of Britain’s biggest businesses by sales, growth, and profitability.

In 2017, the company announced the McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) in Sheffield, Yorkshire which will supply carbon fiber tubs to the MPC. The construction of the new facility is due to conclude by year-end and once fully operational will employ around 200 people. McLaren engines are also assembled in the UK and the in-sourcing of carbon fiber tub production will further increase the UK content of McLaren cars to over 50%. In recognition of its commitment to exemplary UK manufacturing, McLaren Automotive was named 2017 Manufacturer of the Year at the prestigious TMMX National Manufacturing Awards
David Gilbert, Managing Director at McLaren Automotive Europe, commented: “We are very excited to return to our ‘home’ motor show and display some of our breath-taking cars at the ‘Built in Britain’ exhibition. McLaren epitomizes the British luxury sportscar that blends cutting-edge innovation and hand-built craftsmanship. We rely on continuous investment in our home market and are now globally-recognized as the pinnacle of British manufacturing with around 90% of our vehicles exported. I hope that our cars will thrill the visitors at the show and that they will share our excitement and enthusiasm for products made in the UK.”
