Beautiful Bastard

Update: Beautiful Bastard appears to have discontinued most of its products with the exception of the scented candles.

Popular YouTuber and entrepreneur Philip DeFranco has his hands pretty full with the Phillip DeFranco Show, Rogue Rocket News, Defranco Elite, and now Beautiful Bastard grooming products and candles, his first foray into men's grooming products. Philly D's team reached out to see if I would be interested in reviewing the products, as a fan of the show, I was more than happy to check out the lineup since I had been hearing about it on the Philly D' show.

The key selling points are that it is cruelty-free, ethically sourced, and made in the USA, all of which are cool, but what really matters is how it performs and if it smells good. They sent out a Bourbon & Oak medium hold pomade, their Lost Coast Beard Oil, and one of their Carolina Pine candles. So I got one item in each of their signature scents. They also offer a Sea Cliff Mint lip balm, which I didn't get to sample but it is listed on their site.

To make it easier I am going to break down each of the products into a short review below.

Hair Pomade:
The Bourbon and Oak Hair Pomade have a great scent, while they call it a pomade it is more of a wax in the way it is textured and the way it goes on, even though according to the ingredients it doesn't have any natural waxes. Overall it responded better to being combed than just naturally being rubbed into my hair so if you go for that messy look it might not be the right hold for you. The hold was good, but not great, and throughout the day my hair required a little more maintenance than with other brands of hair styling products. My other slight gripe was that the opening for the container is kinda small, as a guy with big hands, it kinda made it awkward.

Priced at $24 it is about the average for a branded product like this, but when you compare it to a major brand like Suave Men for under $5 at your local Target it is hard to make the case for it based on performance. Now if you like the scent, you like supporting Philly D, the product isn't bad, but I don't think it is up to the standard of say House 99 or American Crew.

Beard Oil:
As a bearded guy, lots of companies send me beard oil, but where most of them get it wrong, Beautiful Bastard gets it right. The oil is light and doesn't have a greasy feel to it after it is applied, the scent is subtle, but lasts throughout the day. Again it is being sold as a premium product at $22 a bottle, so it is on the higher end of beard oils, but the quality is good and I don't think you would be disappointed.

Candle:
This has been sitting on my desk burning most days when I am writing or editing photos, it has a great masculine and relaxing scent, it is a nice size and for $12 I will be buying a replacement once this one is done.

Also, take into consideration that through the month of June 10% of your purchase goes directly to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and I am hoping that they will have a rotating charity each month they are supporting.
