The McLaren 620R a Road Ready Racer

by Michael Satterfield

McLaren is bringing their GT4 car to the streets with the new 620R, a road car with all the performance of a fully homologated track car. Powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the GT4 car, but free of racing regulations it makes 610hp and 457lb-ft of torque making the 620R the most power Sports Series McLaren to date, with a 0-60mph of 2.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 200mph.

The suspension also borrows from the GT4 playbook with two-way manually adjustable coilover motorsport dampers which are also 13lbs lighter than the street versions. The suspension also features lightweight aluminum wishbones and uprights and stiffer anti-roll bars. Stopping is handled by the 390mm front and 380mm rear carbon-ceramic disc brakes with forged aluminum calipers. With Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires for the road and optional full-slick motorsport tires for track-days the 620R promise to deliver a new level of handling and braking.

To help keep those P Zeros on the ground the 620R's adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing is the same one fitted to the 570S GT4. Raised 12.5-inches into the cleaner airflow above the vehicle to increase downforce while minimizing drag, the wing is road legal thanks to its incorporated third brake light. At its most aggressive setting the wing produces 408lbs of downforce, for getting the most out of a track-day performance. To meet homologation standards the front bumper, splitter, and hood, have all been redesigned to match that of the GT4 car. The most obvious change the carbon-fiber hood with twin nostrils to aid in downforce and clean up airflow as well as canards which combine to add an additional 143lbs of downforce as part of the new front aero package.

For the North American market, a special MSO upgrade package is available that features a gloss finish Visual Carbon Fibre roof with a roof scoop to maximize engine intake and exhaust sound. The package includes the McLaren Track Telemetry system with lap time function and 3 cameras to record those exhilarating track moments at no extra cost.

The McLaren 570S GT4 is a first-class GT race car that having won races in every championship it has competed in since its first appearance in 2017 is attracting an increasing number of customer racing teams. Now, in response to repeated customer requests, we have homologated that class-leading package for the road in the new McLaren 620R, a limited-edition, 620PS superlight coupé that is the perfect choice for an enthusiast wanting an authentic motorsport driving sensation – and performance to match – on both track and road.
