5 Things You Should Never Do After a Car Accident

When an auto accident occurs, you are likely to be feeling scared, panicked, and possibly disorientated. So, it is not always easy to work out what you need to do to stay safe and ensure that all of the legal bases are covered, in the heat of the moment. It’s really easy to put a foot wrong and make things so much worse.

That’s why below we’ve put together a guide of some important things you should never do after a car accident.

1. Leave the scene

This is a biggie. Often, when you are in shock, you will make bad decisions that you otherwise would never dream of. You might, for example, think of fleeing the scene after a collision. This is a really bad idea, as a professional truck accident lawyer would not hesitate to tell you. Not only is it against the law, but trying to flee when injured could make your injuries worse, and it is important that you stay to help any other parties who may have been harmed too.

2. Not calling the authorities

If you think you can get out of a ticket or, worse, criminal charges, by not calling the cops after an auto accident, then you are in for a rude awakening. Most places have CCTV or there are witnesses to the accident who can give your registration to the cops, and if you are found to have tried to evade the law by simply not reporting an incident, then you could be in for more trouble in the end.

3. Move seriously injured people

If you are unlucky enough to get into a really bad car accident where people are seriously injured, then it is important that you remember not to move them as doing so could make their injuries worse and cause them to bleed out or become paralyzed amongst other things. Call the emergency services, and if the injured people are in the road, do what you can to block it off. Only if there is a very serious risk to leaving someone where they are should you even contemplate moving them, but in most cases, to do so would be a very bad move.

4. Argue over blame

Tempers can flare when a collision has just taken place, but arguing over who is to blame is a really bad idea. These kinds of things can spill over and lead to a physical fight, and from a legal perspective, no one should admit any fault in an accident until they have spoken to a decent auto lawyer or motorcycle accident lawyer if it is a motorcycle accident, so there is that to consider too. Keep calm, cool, and collected, and wait for the relevant authorities to show up.

5. Not getting checked over

You might feel fine, but it is always a good idea to go to the local emergency room and get checked out, sometimes, it is not obvious that you have hurt yourself, and shock responses can be delayed, so the hospital really is the best place to be.

Avoid doing these five things following a car accident and you will be safer and better off legally speaking too.
