Some cars make considerably more sense when you encounter them in the right place. During Motor Valley Fest in Modena, Italy, the streets surrounding the city’s historic center were filled with the sort of machinery that makes this corner of Emilia-Romagna unlike almost anywhere else on earth. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani and Maserati are not simply exotic badges here. They are part of the local landscape.

Off in a corner of the plaza, parked on Modena’s cobblestones was a bright red Maserati that initially looked like a particularly ambitious 1990s tuner car. It was anything but. Covered from splitter to spoiler in period sponsor graphics, wearing a full roll cage and displaying the name “Zardo” on its rear side glass, the car was a Maserati Ghibli Open Cup, one of fewer than 30 competition cars constructed for Maserati’s short-lived but fascinating one-make racing championship.

It represents a period when Maserati was attempting to rediscover its competition identity and, in the process, created one of the wildest versions of the Biturbo platform ever built. As someone who owned a late-80s Biturbo, this was really cool to stumble upon in person.

After Bondurant spun him out at Riverside International Raceway, Grant worked his way up from dead last to 2nd place by the end of the race. While he might not have won, the racing world took notice of the bright yellow Cobra that moved all the way to the podium from 30th place.

CSX2323: The Shelby Cobra That Conquered Sicily Returns To Race At Laguna Seca

Dan Gurney is at the wheel. A 289-cubic-inch Ford V8 is working hard beneath the hood, and there are still hundreds of miles remaining. The image has become one of the defining images of the Shelby Cobra’s European racing campaign. It captures everything that made the Targa Florio fascinating and terrifying. The road is narrow, the scenery is beautiful, and the car appears to be moving far too quickly for either.

More than six decades later, that same Cobra was back on a racetrack at the 2026 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Chassis CSX2323 returned to competition at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca against a field of Cobras, Corvettes, Jaguaurs and Healeys. Wearing its familiar number 146, the car was driven by Alex MacAllister in the Group 3 races for SCCA large-displacement production cars from 1955 through 1967. This was not a replica, continuation car, or modern Cobra dressed in vintage colors. It was the FIA roadster Gurney and Jerry Grant drove across Sicily in 1964.
