Slot Cars Are Back

The Carrera Go!!! Ferrari Pro Speeders

by Michael Satterfield - 04/03/2023

It was a dark and dreary day, the kind that makes you want to curl up under the covers and forget about the world. But for me, that was not an option, pulled on a denim shirt and made my way to my new downtown office. I had spent years working to not have an office, but the business had grown, and having employees and clients means having a workspace. Today I had a mission, to break out the Carrera GO!!! Ferrari Pro Speeders slot car set that had arrived several days earlier, it was raining so why not play with some Ferrari slot cars.

The rain pounded against the windows like a drum, but inside the office, it was quiet, with the exception of the occasional sound of a keyboard. I had cleared off a large corner of the office to set up the track, meticulously arranging each bend and straightaway according to the instructions. The cars sat on the starting line, one Ferrari red with Blancpain on the windshield, the other in the livery of the Italian flag with Hublot and Pirelli sponsorship. It is tough work, but someone has to do it.

With the flick of a switch, the cars sprang to life, roaring down the track at full speed before launching off at the first tight corner. After a little fine-tuning and learning the controls, the cars sped around the track, the noise of the rain outside fading away, replaced by the hum of the electric motors. This was the first time I had played with slot cars since I was a young boy, even in the late 1980s they had been overtaken by the Hot Wheels tracks as the scale model race car of choice. But, setting up a 28-foot slot car track in the office does once again prove to my friends that I might just have the best job in the world.

A quick spin around the Carrera website shows that the possibilities and types of cars/tracks that can be built out of even a base kit are unlimited. Do you want to race a Porsche 917 against a Mercedes F1 car? Pit Lighting McQueen against Mario Kart, Mario? I am glad to see that slot cars are making a comeback, a much-needed break from the screens we all find ourselves in front of. The kit is very easy to put together and the quality of the cars and track was better than I expected at this price point, after spending more time on the site all I am thinking about is how I can find a space to build out the track a little more and have it set up in the office... we are going to need a bigger office.
