Mast Hair Review

Canadian hair product brand MAST was kind enough to send over some of the latest products, Black Pepper Hair Paste, Peppermint Shampoo, and their Black Pepper Beard Oil for me to put to the test. MAST was started by a small group out of Edmonton, barbers at heart, in fact, MAST has two barbershops in their hometown. That real-world experience was what inspired the line and their commitment to simplicity and quality.

The line includes body wash, shampoo, beard oil, and styling paste. The hair paste and shampoo are offered in pouches, which is different, but immediately made me think of how well it would travel, something the team at MAST must have thought of as well since the pouches are at or under the 3.4 ounce/100 milliliter TSA requirements. The beard oil comes in a bottle with a roller ball applicator which I found interesting.

So how does it work? The shampoo's peppermint scent smells like peppermint sticks that were leftover from Christmas, I suppose during the holiday having a faint residual candy-cane smell would be fine, but it wasn't for me. I also felt it competed with the Black Pepper scent of the hairstyling paste and beard oil. The hairstyling paste was excellent and offered a nice all-day hold while still allowing movement and a natural look.

The Black Pepper Beard Oil had a nice scent and I felt was on par with other name-brand beard oils I have used in the past. I did find the rollerball applicator to be a little cumbersome and would have preferred a dropper or just a drip applicator. With a longer beard rolling the ball around on your hand to get enough oil can be needlessly tedious.

Mast Hair Review

Overall MAST is putting out a quality product, I would like to see some different scents offered and perhaps some larger size offerings for home use. The pricing is on par with name brands like House 99 but will need to overcome its lack of distribution to compete head-to-head with brands sold at mainstream retailers. MAST is hoping to expand its network of traditional barbershops in Canada and the US, but currently, the only place to shop is online at masthair.com.
